Stainless steel grades 1.4301 and 1.4307 are also known as 304 and 304 L respectively . Grade 304 stainless steel is the most versatile and widely used stainless steel. It is also sometimes referred to by its former name 18/8, derived from the nominal composition of 304 stainless steel , which is 18 % chromium and 8% nickel .
304 stainless steel is an austenitic grade that can be drawn very deep . This feature has made 304 the dominant class used in applications such as sinks and pots.
304L is the low carbon version of 304. Used in heavy gauge components for improved weldability . Some products, such as plate and pipe, may be available as "dual certified" material that meets both the 304 and 304L criteria.
304H, a high carbon variant, is also available for use at high temperatures.
The property data given in this document is typical for bar and section products in EN 10088-3: 2005 . ASTM, EN or other standards may cover products sold. It is reasonable to expect the specifications in these standards to be similar, but not necessarily the same as those given in this datasheet.

Physical Properties
Type 304L is the low carbon version of 304. Used in heavy gauge components for improved weldability. Some products, such as plate and pipe, may be available as "dual certified" material that meets both the 304 and 304L criteria. A variant of 304H high carbon content is also available for use at high temperatures. This data is blank for flat rolled products under ASTM A240 / A240M with some given specification. It is reasonable to expect the specifications in these standards to be similar, but this data should be the same as known.
