303

1.4305 lama pin does lion steel, popularly known as 303 quality stainless steel. Grade 303 is the easiest to machine among all austenitic stainless steel grades.

The workable nature of the 303 grade is due to the presence of Sulfur in the steel composition. While sulfur improves machining, it also causes a decrease in corrosion resistance and a slight decrease in toughness. The corrosion resistance of 303 stainless steel is lower than that of 304 . Toughness is still excellent as with other austenitic grades.

The property data given in this document is typical for bar products in EN 10088-3: 2005. ASTM or other standards may cover products sold. It is reasonable to expect the specifications in these standards to be similar, but not necessarily the same as those given in this datasheet.

Machinability

303 stainless steel has excellent machinability . Machining can be improved by following the following rules: Cutting edges must be kept sharp. Blind edges cause over processing to harden. The cuts should be light but deep enough to prevent hardening by getting on the metal surface. Chip breakers should be used to keep chips away from work. The low thermal conductivity of austenitic alloys causes heat to concentrate at the cutting edges. This means that coolants and lubricants are required and must be used in large quantities.

Weldability

The addition of sulfur found in 303 stainless steel causes poor weldability . If 303 needs to be welded, recommended filler rods or electrodes are 308L and 309 grade stainless steels. Welds should be annealed for maximum corrosion resistance.

Physical Properties

Grade 303 is used in applications that require parts to be heavily machined. These applications include:

  • Aircraft fittings
  • Shafts
  • Nuts and bolts
  • Gears
